Some background information might be useful here to help you understand what you will see! These video footages were taken in August 2002 from a helicopter, just before the villas opened. So, the grounds were not quite finished / as lush as they are now. Plus we were just about to finish our sea defenses. In 2002 we had an el nino effect, which meant higher tides and waves then normal (generally, you will not see waves as large as on this day - not that they are that large in the video). But this does explain the slightly brownish water just off the beach (from where the waves had been splashing against the land). This is not normal, and anyway, you can see the coral area is still as clear as you need for snorkelling.

Finally, the land / soil around the villas is very, very dry (as you will observe). But the irony is we have ample water, probably more than anywhere else in Bali. Not in rainfall, but in ground water that comes from Lake Batur and then seeps through the ground and works its way down (hence why neighboring Les has Bali's tallest waterfall). Not only do we have massive ground water reserves, but we also have a feed from the local reservoir. Which makes the pictures look strange, as the surface outside the villas is so dry. That is one of the benefits of this area. Much less rain then in other districts, but plentiful ground water to ensure the palm trees grow so lush. You can see this for yourselves if you travel East towards Tulamben and Amed from the villas. As you clear Mt. Batur (20 miles on) and its ground water, suddenly there are very few palm trees.

This is a sea level fly by, and then round / over shot. Once you pass the villas you can see the local small, colourful fishing boats called "Jukung" in front of the village's sea temple. The coconut palm that leans over the beach is a perfect place for a siesta!

A higher fly by and then down to see the villas in detail, and then up again looking down at the grounds. When the video starts, you may be able to see the early morning mist hanging over the village. If you look closely, you will see the downdraft from the helicopter's rotors rippling the sea!
