Our
grounds are right on the beach. The waters here are clean and
clear, with a protected living coral reef literally in front of our villas.
The beach is a mixture of black sand and small to medium sized pebbles.
The sand is black courtesy of the sacred mountain / volcano Mt. Agung, although we
are not in an area near / at risk from the mountain (should it ever erupt
again). In fact, we are next to Mt. Batur, further west.
Our grounds, a former coconut plantation, are rich in coconut palms,
most of which we crop (for safety
reasons). As part of our eco-friendly nature, we only fell those trees
we had to (that is why you will find palm trees seemingly growing out
of the swimming pool and lotus pond areas). This affords the villas and
the grounds with a great deal of natural shade (very important on hot
days). By providing shade to the villas, and due to the virtually continuous
sea breezes, most people will find they do not want air conditioning (although
all the villa bedrooms provide this).
As well as coconuts, we also have mature Mango and other
fruiting trees (we use the fruit from these to make ice cream). We have
added a perimeter fence of bamboo and banana (some ornamental, some fruiting),
which is both strong and beautiful. Birds of paradise and fruiting Papaya
trees also fulfill a place at the back of the villas. Both to add to the
tropical feel of the grounds, plus give guests first hand experience (and
taste) of how these fruits grow. Red and white (the Indonesian national
colors) hibiscus grow between the villas to ensure privacy. While red
and white bougainvillea grow around the restaurant. The grounds are given
to grass to relax on, with many beautiful plants / shrubs for borders.
The sea is generally very calm throughout the year, and makes for excellent
swimming / snorkeling. During late January and February, the winds tend
to pick up and waves form. However, we are located in a relatively sheltered
part of the coastline even then. From the beach, you are able to catch
a range of edible fish (our staff will advise you and steer you clear
of the reef and the ornamental fish that reside there). Coral and shells
wash up frequently, and guests are welcome to take these home. However,
please note, we have a firm policy of making sure guests observe the protected
nature of the living reef, and do not damage this in any way.
The grounds are accessed at the end of an asphalt service
road that is only ever used by the villas, locals during festivals, local
residents (of which there are not many, and none near the beach), local
people / children to come and sit on the beach. We are 330 meters from
the main north Bali road, which is very quiet / not busy. To our East
is the village temple followed by a small fishing village with colorful
outriggers. To our West are coconuts, and plenty of them. Our grounds
run 90 meters along the coast.
When
the local people have ceremonies, it makes for a spectacular event, and
guests (properly dressed / trained - we will make sure you are set) are
very, very welcome. In fact, we have the village's holy Jepun (Frangipani)
tree in our grounds for good luck. We guaranteed to preserve the tree
and build a temple around it. This beautiful tree constantly blooms and
we used the finest stones / craftsmen to construct the temple. It is a
particularly serene part of the estate.
Around the grounds we have placed sun lounges with huge
sunbrellas. The fabrics of both are genuine imported Sunbrella material,
so are soft, do not fade and are spill / weather resistant. In addition,
along the front of the swimming pool and spa areas, you will find a number
of large, very comfortable hammocks of natural cotton (we have both rope
style and sheet style according to your preference). The resort is raised
around 2 meters above the beach, which affords greater sea views and also privacy.
